Join Trade School Co-founder Casey Anderson for a listening workshop exploring Alvin Lucier's classic "(Hartford) Memory Space" (or "(Altadena) Memory Space" in our case) an experimental music piece requiring zero musical training in which participants "record" an outdoor location with a "memory aid" and bring the location back to Trade School via an informal performance.
The workshop begins with a brief overview of Lucier's work and aesthetic priorities, as well as the opportunity to hear excerpts of key pieces on Trade School's PA. We then dive into "(Altadena) Memory Space," traveling into our neighborhood individually to archive the sounds one encounters there and then discussing modes of listening and interaction with sound. The workshop concludes with an informal performance of each participant's "recording." Perfect for those interested in experimental music, the practice of listening, field recording, and reflecting on the unique sonic features of our Altadena neighborhood.
All "instruments" and "recording devices" / "memory aids" will be provided by TS. No previous experience required, all are welcome.
