I will be teaching people how to build contact mics to be attached to melons. Once equipped with melons participants will join a drum circle. Later they will eat their melons (hopefully amplified).

Fallen Fruit

David Allen Burns and Austin Young / Fallen Fruit creates beautiful and sumptuous spaces where audiences can enjoy museum collections in new, unexpected ways that simultaneously reveal a series of layered social constructs. Fallen Fruit is an art collaboration originally conceived in 2004 by David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young. Since 2013, David and Austin have continued the collaborative work. This Art project began in Los Angeles by creating maps of public fruit: the fruit trees growing on or over public property. The work of Fallen Fruit includes photographic portraits, experimental documentary videos, and site-specific installation artworks. Using fruit (and public spaces and public archives) as a material for interrogating the familiar, Fallen Fruit investigates interstitial urban spaces, bodies of knowledge, and new forms of citizenship. From protests to proposals for utopian shared spaces, Fallen Fruit’s work aims to reconfigure the relationship of sharing and explore understandings of what is considered both — public and private. From their work, the artists have learned that “fruit” is symbolic and that it can be many things; it’s a subject and an object at the same time it is aesthetic. Much of the work they create is linked to ideas of place and generational knowledge, and it echoes a sense of connectedness with something very primal – our capacity to share the world with others.

Machine Project (2003 - 2018) was an informal, non-profit, educational institution located in a storefront space in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles and a group of people working together to create, study and share new forms of culture and ways of living. We collaborate with artists, thinkers and local communities to produce non-commercial projects that investigate art, performance, technology, science, music, literature and new ideas for creative engagement. We believe an organization can be a machine for thinking together.

Casey Anderson (they / them) is designing and repurposing technologies to activate participatory practice, primarily involving explorations of sound, in diverse cultures and communities. Performances, exhibitions, and residencies include MOCA - Los Angeles (CA), ISSUE Project Room (NY), STEIM (NL), Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL), Mass MOCA (MA), The Walker Art Center (MN), and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (CA). Over the last two decades they have lead numerous initiatives at the intersection of arts programming and community organization, including hybrid web-journal/festivals (the Experimental Music Yearbook, with John P. Hastings and Scott Cazan), as well as community arts centers/venues like Trade School (with Arden Stern), the wulf., BETALEVEL, and Machine Project. As an educator they have taught at ArtCenter College of Design and UCLA. They currently live in Los Angeles, California, own and operate the organizational initiative a wave, and teach at KAOS Network.
